Datacenter transfer Frankfurt to Strasbourg PDF Print

Today, 040Hosting would like like to present our choice for our European data center Datadock for now and the future.

Datadock is Europe's most environment-friendly data center and has already won the eco Award 2010 donated by the German Internet Association "eco" as the best data center. Furthermore, it received the highest rating of five stars in the independent Datacenter Star Audit, which evaluates the technical quality of data centers.

In more than three years of planning and construction time there was aimed at building an eco-friendly and at the same time ultra-modern data center with a comprehensive security and redundancy concept. Located in Strasbourg, France, this would be the perfect location for our services, situated on the most important and fastest glass fiber routes to Germany and the rest of Europe.

Datadock is connected directly to the most important European internet exchange points over our own redundant 100 GBit backbone hence it features the perfect speed and availability of your data. On the other hand, the area around Strasbourg is very rich in groundwater, which rendered it possible to implement an innovative and eco-friendly cooling concept at Datadock.

The current Frankfurt data center will be closed for operations by the end of 2010, so we are currently planning to start migrating all EU servers to the new facility mid September, transfers will be done off peak hours (between 00:00 and 08:00am GMT+1). Servers in our St.Louis (US) data center are not affected.

We will inform you about the exact date at least one week before moving your servers. The move will not affect any changes of server settings, your private network setup or IP address settings. All IP addresses will remain the same.

Some more interesting facts about Datadocks.

An unrivaled cooling system has been installed at datadock. This system makes use of the area's extensive ground water sources, which are extracted by means of specially built wells. Normally, cooling is one of the most important power and cost factors in a data center. But since the ground water is only 12° C cold when it's taken out of the ground, its temperature doesn't have to be further decreased in order to use it in the data center. This has great impact on the energy balance. The ground water itself never gets into the data center's inner cooling cycle. It is only used for taking the heat from the inner cooling cycle at the heat exchangers. It is neither polluted in this process nor is any water wasted. Due to this cost-saving and efficient cooling method the European top PUE value (Power Usage Efficiency) of 1.21 is achieved.

eco Internet Award 2010 – Data Center

On June 10th, 2010 Internet related companies were granted the eco Internet Award for the tenth time. The award donated by "eco", the German association of Internet business, could be won in a total of nine categories. Due to its outstanding characteristics, datadock won the award in the category Data Center.

Due to its outstanding PUE value of 1.21, the redundant structure in all areas, its security concept and the best possible Datacenter Star Audit certification of five stars, datadock was able to score in all criteria.

Datacenter Star Audit (DCSA)
The data center datadock achieved the highest possible rating of five stars at the Datacenter Star Audit. The DCSA constitutes a quality standard for data centers and is carried out by the "eco" association of German Internet business. As this audit was carried out by an independent authority, it is a good reference for the high reliability, security and power efficiency of datadock.

If you have any questions please consult our knowledgebase or contact us with your additional questions or concerns.

Thank you for attention and we will get back to you with detailed information on when your site and/or server will be moved to our new datacenter.

Kindest regards,

Ksplice Uptrack used by 040Hosting PDF Print

040 Hosting uses Ksplice040 Hosting uses Ksplice Uptrack to keep their servers up to date with the latest kernel updates; by utilizing Ksplice Uptrack services on our 040 Hosting Shared, 040 Hosting Semi-Dedicated and 040 Hosting Reseller services we do not need to rebooted at each kernel update; but we will be using this new technology to give our users the most uptime and the least inconvience possible while keeping our servers as much up to date as possible.

About Ksplice technology
Today, every mainstream operating system requires regular reboots in order to be up to date and secure.  Since reboots cause downtime and disruption, people are forced into the uncomfortable dilemma of choosing between security and convenience.

Any delay in patching software problems—even a delay of just a few days to arrange for downtime—can have serious consequences.  Within just six days after the announcement of the Linux sys_prctl vulnerability, many servers had been compromised, including an important server for the Debian distribution.

Ksplice enables running systems to stay secure without the disruption of rebooting.  Specifically, Ksplice creates rebootless updates that are
based on traditional source code patches.  These updates are as effective as traditional updates, but they can be applied seamlessly, with no downtime.

Ksplice currently supports updating the Linux kernel, but the Ksplice  technology applies to any operating system or to user space applications.
