Email accounts

The Email Accounts feature of cPanel software is invaluable to website owners that want to host email for themselves and other users.

Through the Email Accounts interface a website owner can:

  • Create new email accounts
  • Change passwords on existing accounts
  • Change mailbox size
  • Access the email’s webmail portal
  • Auto-Configure the local email client for
  • Outlook
  • Delete email accounts

The Email Accounts page even allows the website owner to search through email accounts and even access the default email account for the site.

Forwarders create a simple way for creating email aliases. A great example would be if info@yourdomain.tld wanted to get all email going to myshop@yourdomain.tld as well. Through the forwarder interface, a website owner can do this in a few clicks.

The forwarder interface also allows the website owner to create a domain forwarder for all email that comes to their domain. Another great example is if joe@sample.tld wants to receive all the email that comes into sample-two.tld. This allows the website owner to cut down on time spent checking email accounts.

Mailing Lists creates a simple interface for creating custom Mailman mailing lists. Through the mailing lists interface, website owners can create new mailing lists in a few seconds. The interface also allows website owners to modify current mailing lists through the Mailman interface.

The Mailman interface allows the mailing list owner to create a custom interface for users to sign up to the address, prefix mail postings, create welcome messages, and even a message when a member leaves the list. More information on Mailman can be found on

Please note that there are limits in place on the amount of emails can be send per hour on your shared hosting accounts, this to avoid the servers to fall victim to spammers quickly.

Delivery Reports allow a website owner to review emails sent from the default account. This provides the website owner with powerful tool to diagnose and troubleshoot email issues.

Reports can be generated based off of keyword, date, and time. Use one, two, or all of these criteria when searching through reports. The reports can then be organized with click of a button. This report will show the message delivery date, time, and status

The MX Entry feature allows the website owner to choose how the mail exchanger (MX) is setup for their domain.

Through this interface, the website owner can choose the mail exchanger used for routing emails, backup the mail exchanger, and even automatically detect the mail exchanger the server is using.

The Webmail feature provides web based access to your email accounts and more importantly the ability for email account owners to perform key actions on their accounts.

The Webmail interface provides the following functionality:

  • Email filtering
  • Delivery Reports
  • Password Modification
  • Ability to create and modify Auto Responders

Auto Responders create an automatic reply to emails to certain accounts. From an out of office reply to an order confirmation email, auto responders can let customers know that a website owner, or email account, has received the email. This tool can also create an automatic response to no reply accounts.

When using an Auto Responder, certain characteristics of the incoming email can be used in the response generated by cPanel. The subject, from name (when available), and incoming email address can all be used to create a custom message for each response.

The Account Level Filtering feature for cPanel, allows the website owner to create filters on the default. accounts This allows emails that meet certain criteria to be treated in specific ways.

User Leveling Filtering brings all of features in Account Level Filtering to the user level. This allows individual users to have the same level of customization, regarding email filtering, as the website owner.

The Import Addresses/Forwarders feature allows for the bulk creation of email address and email forwarders through comma separated value (csv) files and excel spreedsheets (xls) files.

Through this tool email accounts, passwords, quotas can be created in bulk through a quick and painless method.

This also makes creating massive amounts of forwarders a cinch.

The cPanel interface even includes sample files of each to help website owners with the details of the process.

SpamAssassin is a powerful tool that automatically searches through email for the tell tale signs of spam. As many website owners can attest to, spam is one of the most troubling part of hosting email accounts.

Through the simple point and click interface Spam Assassin can:

  • Enable SpamAssassin
  • Enable Auto-Delete Spam (This sets the number of filters a message hits before marked as spam)
  • Disable Auto-Delete Spam
  • Configure SpamAssassin:
    • Whitelist
    • Blacklist
    • Set score ratings on different filters

The Email Authentication feature allows website owners to sign emails through DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM). This allows the recipients of emails from the website owners domain to certify the messages sent from it are genuinely from the domain that they claim to be from. This works to prevent spammers from forging emails from your site.

Another feature of Email Authentication is the Sender Policy Framework (SPF). This allows a website owner to setup remote servers and IP addresses to send email from your domain. This helps minimize spam on outgoing messages.

The Email Archiving feature allows users to save incoming, outgoing, or mailing list messages for a specified amount of time. Archived messages are stored under the mail directory in the user’s home directory.

Site Security

Password Protect Directories allows website owners to protect folders on their site with passwords. This means if someone wishes to access the folder or any of the content inside that folder, they must login with a valid username and password. This is hand for protecting valuable data or even just staging something that will not go live until later. To go even further 040Hosting has integrated the Password Protect Directories in their Web Application Firewall so attempts to intrude the page by means of brute force will automatically block them.

Leech Protect allows website owners to protect content and data from users that give out passwords to the public. Instead of many visits from a compromised account, the visitor will be redirected to a URL of your choice.

IP Deny Manager allows website owners to block a single or range of IP addresses. This feature also allows you block a fully qualified domain name if the server can resolve the IP. This allows website owners to block specific IPs that may be causing abuse.

HotLink Protection prevents other websites from directly linking to files (as specified below) on a website. Other sites will still be able to link to any file type that a website owner doesn’t specify (i.e., HTML files). An example of hotlinking would be using an tag to display an image from a site somewhere else on the Web. The end result is that the other site is stealing bandwidth. The interface does allow a website owner to list sites from which they wish to allow direct links.

Backups allow website owners to create backups for the different sections of their site. Through the Backups interface a website owner can download:

  • Full Website backup
  • Daily System backup
  • Weekly System backup
  • Monthly backup
  • Partial downloads:
    • Home directory backup
    • MySQL database backup
    • Email forwarders backup
    • Email filters backup

The Backup interface also allows the website owner restore backups to the server incase of a failure or issue with the server or site.

The File Manager tool allows website owners to change content, add new files and folders, move and many more powerful tools. All of this done is a simple graphical interface. This tool removes the need for command line coding and the sometimes confusing intricacies that come with command line interfaces.

These tools allow the website owner to:

  • Create new files
  • Create new folders
  • Copy Files and Folders
  • Move Files and Folders
  • Upload files from a local machine
  • Download files to the local machine
  • Delete files and folders
  • Rename files and folders
  • Edit files through:
    • A simple text editor
    • A graphical color coded code editor
    • A graphical WYSIWYG HTML editor
    • Change file and folder permissions
    • View files
    • Extract and compress files

Disk Space Usage allows website owners know exactly where their data is concentrated. A simple graph gives website owners the power to find the source of overflowing data. Whether it is in mail, backups, or temp files, Disk Space Usage can show website owners where and what is taking up valuable space.

The FTP Accounts tool in cPanel allows website owner to control who has access to upload, download, and edit files and folders through File Transmission Protocol (FTP). FTP accounts can be created through a simple form and restrictions such as directory size can be levied on the FTP accounts. Through this interface, website owners can also change passwords, change quotas, delete accounts, and even download configuration files for popular FTP clients.

FTP Session Control empowers website owners with the ability to actively see which users are actively using FTP.

Through the FTP Session Control interface website owners can:

  • See logged in users
  • See source of connection
  • See login time
  • See user status
  • Disconnect a user
  • See Process ID

Subdomains give the website owner the ability to create, manage, and remove subdomains. Subdomains are URL address for different parts of a website. An example of this would be a site named sample.tld having a subdomain of a.sample.tld that goes to a different directory or location. The amount of subdomains you can setup depends on the hosting package purchased.

Addon Domains allow a website owner to host a completely different website under their account. This would let the owner run a site called sample.tld and a site called default.tld as if they were two completely seperate accounts.

The website owner sets the Addon Domain to exist in a sub section of their home directory

Note that from a security point of view it would still be better to have two hosting packages, using Addon domains will run the sites under the same user account and using the same resources as allocated to this package.

Parked Domains allow website owners to point additional domain names they own to their site. If sample.tld owned test.tld, Parked Domains would allow the owner to point test.tld to sample.tld. All of this can be done with one simple form.

Parked Domains will also allow a website owner to point an Parked Domain to a directory of the main domain. This would mean test.tld could point to the sample.tld/test/ folder.

Redirects allow website owners redirect one web page to another page and display the contents of that page. This is ideal pages that have long URLs and a website owner wishes to create a redirect from a shorter link.

A website owner can create modify and remove Redirects through a simple interface and with little or no knowledge of Domain Name System (DNS).

The new Advanced DNS Zone Editor allows website owners to create and manage A records and CNAMEs for their website but also many other type of DNS records like MX (mail records). The Domain Name System (DNS) is the service that takes a name, such as sample.tld, and then turns it into an IP, like The best analogy for DNS is a phone book: where with a name, a phone number can be obtained.

A Records are a name that turns into a number. CNAMEs are a name that turns into another name, the client will then continue on the path with the new name. If you have a basic site and domain with us we automatically configure DNS for you, but if you need to fine tune your  DNS or have a different setup which needs advanced DNS settings you will not be limited and can configure your DNS to your needs.
