Barcelona! Cloudflare’s 101st data center

Located alongside the Mediterranean, Barcelona, is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, the second-most populated municipality in Spain and the core of the fifth-most populous urban area in the Europe. Cloudflare’s data center in Barcelona is their 3rd in the Iberian Peninsula following the deployments in Madrid and Lisbon, it is Cloudflares 28th in Europe, and 101st globally. This means not only better performance in Catalonia and Spain, but additional redundancy for Cloudflare’s European data centers.

As of this moment, Cloudflare has a point of presence (PoP) in 7 out of Europe’s 10 most populous urban areas, and with number 8 coming soon. Rome, Italy.

Cloudflare has connected to the Catalunya Neutral Internet Exchange (“CATNIX”). This raises the number of exchanges that Cloudflare is a participant in to over 150. As Cloudflare expands their peering, more visitors get served locally. If you wish to connect with Cloudflare at CATNIX (or any of our other locations) you can find their peering details on their PeeringDB profile.

Zürich, Switzerland: CloudFlare’s 69th data center

Zürich, Switzerland is the 69th cloudflare datacenter globally! Located at the northern tip of Lake Zürich in Switzerland, the city of Zürich, often referred to as “Downtown Switzerland,” is the largest city in the country. Following this expansion, traffic from Switzerland’s seven million internet users to sites and apps using CloudFlare is now mere milliseconds away. Although best known to some for its chocolate and banks, Switzerland is home to many of the most significant developments prefacing the modern internet.

Changes to VAT on digital services in the European Union 2015

Changes to VAT on digital services in the European Union

The European Directive 2002/38/EC* has introduced new VAT rules involving business to consumer supplies of digital services, which will come into force on the 1st January 2015. The EU has introduced a unique online service, the VAT Mini One Stop Shop (VAT MOSS). We explain the impact of this decision.

Changes for individuals

The new rules are being introduced so that citizens of the EU will be charged the VAT rate of their country of residence and no longer the VAT rate in the jurisdiction where their digital services provider is based. This means that European individuals will be subject to the VAT of their country of residence, regardless of the country from which they purchase a digital service. A UK resident who buys an e-service from a provider based in the Netherlands will be subject to the UK VAT in force (20%), for example.

VAT rates vary from 15% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary. This new directive may increase or decrease these rates in some countries (see the list of VAT rates in EU countries**).

Please make sure you have your address details correct in our billing system so that the correct VAT can be calculated.

Recurring payments; important update:

This above means that if you have setup a recurring payment this recurring payment may be wrong, if your tax rate in your country is 21% there is no need ot change at this moment in time as the Tax rate on your account was before also 21%; but if your tax rate in your country is Higher or Lower you have to cancel your recurring payment with your payment provider (Either by logging into Paypal or 2Checkout to remove the recurring payment) at the next invoice you are able to setup a recurring payment again. Please note that if your country changes its tax rate you must also update your recurring payments !

If you are a customer within the EU and your country has a different tax rate as 21% please follow the following steps  for your recurring payment to stop:

To cancel your recurring payment in Paypal:

– Log in to your PayPal account.
– Click the ‘Settings’ icon at the top of the page.
– Under ‘Payment settings’, click Pre-approved payments..
– Use the filter to select the seller whose agreement you want to cancel and click Cancel.
– Click Cancel Profile to confirm your request.

To cancel your  recurring payment in 2Checkout:

– Please contact our sales department for assistance at least 5 working days prior the recurring payment.

Changes for Companies

If your company is located within Europe and you have a valid VATid added to our portal nothing will change for you. If you are located within Europe but do not have a VATid you will not be considered a company and will pay VAT as described above.

For companies or consumers outside of Europe nothing will change.

Datacenter Europe, Strasbourg

Datadock is Europe’s most environment-friendly data center and has already won the eco Award 2010 donated by the German Internet Association “eco” as the best data center. Furthermore, it received the highest rating of five stars in the independent Datacenter Star Audit, which evaluates the technical quality of data centers.

In more than three years of planning and construction time there was aimed at building an eco-friendly and at the same time ultra-modern data center with a comprehensive security and redundancy concept. Located in Strasbourg, France, this would be the perfect location for our services, situated on the most important and fastest glass fiber routes to Germany and the rest of Europe.

datadock network specs

Datadock datacenter is connected directly to the most important European internet exchange points over our own redundant 100 GBit backbone hence it features the perfect speed and availability of your data. On the other hand, the area around Strasbourg is very rich in groundwater, which rendered it possible to implement an innovative and eco-friendly cooling concept at Datadock.

The current Frankfurt data center will be closed for operations by the end of 2010, so we are currently planning to start migrating all EU servers to the new facility mid September, transfers will be done off peak hours (between 00:00 and 08:00am GMT+1). Servers in our St.Louis (US) data center are not affected.

We will inform you about the exact date at least one week before moving your servers. The move will not affect any changes of server settings, your private network setup or IP address settings. All IP addresses will remain the same.

Some more interesting facts about Datadocks.

An unrivaled cooling system has been installed at datadock. This system makes use of the area’s extensive ground water sources, which are extracted by means of specially built wells. Normally, cooling is one of the most important power and cost factors in a data center. But since the ground water is only 12° C cold when it’s taken out of the ground, its temperature doesn’t have to be further decreased in order to use it in the data center. This has great impact on the energy balance. The ground water itself never gets into the data center’s inner cooling cycle. It is only used for taking the heat from the inner cooling cycle at the heat exchangers. It is neither polluted in this process nor is any water wasted. Due to this cost-saving and efficient cooling method the European top PUE value (Power Usage Efficiency) of 1.21 is achieved.

Datacenter Star Audit (DCSA)

dsaThe data center datadock, once again, received the highest possible rating of five stars in Datacenter Star Audit’s new Version 3.0. Carried out by the eco Association of the German Internet Industry, the DCSA is an objective and independent quality seal for data centers.

The DSCA 3.0 is a completely new audit, revised in 2013. Data centers are assessed by at least two independent auditors according to predetermined criteria.

Approved Energy Efficient Data Center

greenstarAs part of the DCSA, datadock is one of the first data centers to also receive the new green star. The green star certifies datadock as an ”Approved Energy Efficient Data Center„ and thus highlights its optimal energy efficiency.
